Award Information, Nomination and
Application Procedures 2007
The Wireless Educator of the Year Award, sponsored by the Global Wireless Education Consortium (GWEC), is given annually to up to two (2) academic instructors from all levels of postsecondary education (two-year associate, baccalaureate, graduate) in recognition of their programmatic and individual contributions to wireless engineering, communications, systems and/or technology education. The purpose of the award is to honor distinguished educators and to recognize their pivotal role in educating and preparing tomorrow's wireless technology leaders.
The Award
The 2007 awards will be presented at the CTIA Wireless show, scheduled for March 26-29 in Orlando. FL (www.ctia.org). This spring convention is considered the largest, most comprehensive show in the wireless industry and provides an ideal environment for educators to meet with corporate representatives and learn about innovations in wireless telecommunications. Award recipients then can bring this current knowledge about the wireless industry - its direction and trends, research interests, new products and services, "killer apps", and future employment opportunities for students back to their classrooms.
Award recipients receive:
- Complimentary registration, Wireless Data University (value: $300)
- Smart Pass Registration to CTIA Wireless 2007 (value: $745)
- Roundtrip airfare and lodging to attend the CTIA Show (reimbursement of "actual expenses" up to $1,000)
- Inscribed commemorative plaque
- Formal letters of commendation sent to President or Provost, Dean, and Department Head at awardees' institutions
- Significant national press and publicity
Qualifications
Nominees will be evaluated on a number of criteria. The educator should possess many of the following:
- Clearly discernable (observable; measurable) contributions to wireless education.
- Evidence of achievement would include excellence in teaching; research; publications; papers given at technical conferences; participation in the development or authorship of instructional material or a text; curriculum, course and/or laboratory development; and other awards or activities.
- Demonstrated involvement and/or support of students in wireless projects or initiatives (e.g., mentoring, lab assistance, capstone projects, placement of students with internship or employment opportunities, advising and counseling students before and after graduation, etc.), representing some connection beyond a lecture in a classroom.
- Ability to inspire students to high levels of accomplishment. Evidence of achievement would be student awards or commendation, scholarships for further study in wireless, and job placement for students within the wireless industry upon graduation.
- Demonstrated collaboration with industry.
- Demonstrated collaboration with other academic institutions.
- Strong record of involvement in GWEC, including personal contributions to the development, review and/or implementation of the GWEC Wireless Curriculum.
- Affiliation with a GWEC Education Partner institution in good standing.
Each educator will be notified of his/her nomination and in order to be considered, must agree that, should they be awarded "Wireless Educator of the Year", they will attend the CTIA show for personal acceptance of their award.
Nomination
Nominations may be made by any individual affiliated with any entity worldwide. Candidates may be full-time, part-time, adjunct, tenured or non-tenured faculty, instructors or administrators affiliated with a GWEC Education Partner institution in good standing.
