What are the Points of Knowledge?

The Points of Knowledge (POKs) characterize the required information and experience content for 2-year and 4-year wireless-focused curriculums.

The GWEC Curriculum Committee realized early in the development stages that schools needed flexibility in designing their wireless curriculums. To address this need, the theoretical POKs were developed by industry and education representatives.

With wireless technicians, wireless engineers, wireless computer specialists and educators working together, GWEC is helping to develop courses that include the POKs. Further, GWEC Education Partners have the benefit of GWEC Industry Members' expertise as they develop lab projects/experiments for each POK.

The Points of Knowledge are divided into these knowledge categories:

  • Basic Skills - Specific to Wireless
  • Radio Transmission - RF Theory
  • Switch/Basic Data Communications
  • Switch/Basic Switching Systems
  • Switch/Basic Telephony Systems
  • Switch/Basic Data Networks
  • Transmission & Trunking/Concepts of Traffic Engineering
  • Transmission & Trunking-Basic T-1/Digital Telephony
  • Transmission & Trunking/Transmission
  • Transmission & Trunking/Intelligent Networking
  • Frequency Reuse
  • Communications
  • Air Interface - Access Standards
  • RF Propagation
  • Digital Voice/Digital Vocoding & Techniques
  • Microwave/Microwave Systems
  • Power Plant
  • Test Tools/Equipment/Software
  • Regulatory/Standards/Conventions
  • Professional Affiliations
  • Health and Safety
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)

The Points of Knowledge are the basis for two documents: the Industry Resource Guide and the Education Resource Guide. The Industry Resource Guide gives, for each POK, examples of use within specific wireless professions. With the Industry Resource Guide, students can understand the practical application of their knowledge while still in the classroom. The Education Resource Guide is completed by each GWEC Education Partner. This guide gives, for each POK, the courses, materials and labs used to teach the POK in that partner's curriculum.

The Industry Resource Guide is available to anyone visiting this website.

The Education Resource Guide is available on the web site to member schools.
