Test your RF IQ and Win Prizes
Are you an RF genius in the making? Have you set off the office sprinklers trying to prove Ohm's law? Do you have a favorite frequency? Do you display plots of spectrogram outputs on your mantle? Its okay, Tektronix says. They understand. RF can do that to a person.

Take the RFIQ Challenge. Tektronix and IEEE Communications Magazine are presenting a series of online tests to uncover the geniuses of the RF world. It's competition, with prizes; including a free trip to Hawaii for IMS '07 and monthly drawings for Radio Shack gift cards.

When you take the tests you'll ascertain your RFIQ. Genius to idiot. Superstar to half-wit. James Bond to Homer Simpson. You can even experience the joy that comes from out-smarting others when you challenge a colleague to take the tests. Find out who's the RF genius and who's the (ouch) moron.

The bragging rights to the top title of RF Genius are officially up for grabs.

"Designing Next Generation Test Systems" by National Instruments
This application note is the first in a series designed to help develop test systems that lower cost while increasing test throughput, and providing scalable system architecture for future requirements.

Test managers and engineers use automated test systems in applications ranging from design validation and end-of-line production test to equipment repair diagnostics for product quality and reliability. Automated test systems can offer simple "pass" or "fail" tests or a wide range of product characterization measurements earlier in the sdevelopment process, saving you time, money, and resources.

This developer's guide, titled "Designing Next Generation Test Systems," includes white papers that:
  • Address challenges that continue pressuring engineering teams to reduce the cost and time of test
  • Provide insight into how test managers and engineers are overcoming these challenges
  • Offer guidelines on building modular, software-defined test systems that significantly increase test system throughput and flexibility while reducing overall cost.

National Instruments, a leader in automated test, is committed to providing the hardware and software products engineers need to create these next-generation test systems.

Book - 'Riding the Waves' By Yaron Eitan with Uri Miron
Riding the Waves recounts the gripping story of Geotek - one of the past decade's most innovative wireless ventures - from the perspective of its founder and CEO, Yaron Eitan. During its short lifespan, Geotek went from a small, obscure defense company to one of Wall Street's biggest stars, introducing a series of revolutionary wireless products in the process. Yet shortly after its proprietary national wireless network was launched, the company, which had by then raised close to $800M, found itself on the edge of bankruptcy.

Sidebar: Standards on the Way ... in 2007
News Story by Joanie Wexler

NOVEMBER 29, 2004 (COMPUTERWORLD) - The IEEE 802.11 Task Group S met in September to begin developing a standard for interoperable wireless LAN mesh infrastructures. There are at least two items that the standard will likely define:

1. How a packet selects its multihop path across the wireless mesh. Today, this is the secret sauce giving early vendors their value-add. Best-path selection is analogous to traditional Layer 3 wired routing protocols, such as Open Shortest Path First, or OSPF. In wireless configurations, though, the algorithm must be tightly coupled with Layer 1 radio metrics, accounting for physical-layer issues such as signal strength and interference when selecting a path.

2. Authentication and security extensions for mesh. Part of the standard's scope is still to be decided, says Steven Conner, wireless network architect at Intel Corp.'s Communications Technology Lab and technical editor for the IEEE 802.11 Task Group S. For example, he speculates that the standard could include the way a node selects a channel and what transmission power to use.

Conner predicts that proposals will be received during the first half of 2005 and that the standard will be complete sometime in 2007.

The term mesh network refers to a network topology in which devices are connected with many redundant interconnections between network nodes. In a true mesh network -- wired or wireless -- every node has a connection to every other node in the network, whether directly or via hopping though intermediate nodes.

Looking specifically at wireless mesh networks, they are actually more truly switched wireless networks than those that use so-called wireless LAN switches.

In a mesh network, packets are forwarded wirelessly from node to node. Products called WLAN switches, on the other hand, don't actually support any wireless interfaces.

Note, though, that mesh architectures don't preclude the use of a WLAN switch or other centralized management architecture on the wired side of the network.
